If you want to list your car or truck for sale then you can’t go wrong with AutoTrader. At the starting price of a mere $20 you can get your ad in front of 15 million serious car shoppers. With that many potential buyers it’d be difficult not to sell your car in the allotted time frame.
In addition to the written guide below, we have also created a video tutorial for how to sell your car on AutoTrader. Many people prefer to learn through video rather than writing, so we have both options available to you. The video tutorial is located at the bottom of this page.
Getting started with AutoTrader is easy, and simply a matter of selecting and filling in a few fields about your vehicle. From start to finish you’re looking at maybe 10 minutes tops.
Are you ready to get started?
Steps to Listing Your Vehicle on AutoTrader.com
Step 1. Go to AutoTrader.com
Step 2. Fill in your zip code.
Before you get started you may be asked to fill in your zip code. It’ll be in a blue box to the left side of the screen.
Step 3. Choose your ad.
To start creating your ad you’ll want to find and click on the link that says “Sell Your Car” found in the navigation at the top of the home page.
Next you’ll want to choose whether you want to “Place an Ad, Sell Privately with VIP or Trade In.” For this tutorial I went with the “Place an Ad” option. Unless you’re selling a top end (expensive) car that’s the option I suggest going with. If you’re selling a high end car such as a BMW or Mercedes, then by all means get some help with the VIP option.
On the next page you’ll find 4 different price points. I can’t tell you which one to choose. However, since the price difference between 3 and 8 weeks & 3 and 9 photos is only $10, I’d at least go with the $30 package.
Step 4. Create your ad.
Now it’s time to create your ad. Follow these steps.
1. Choose the year of your car.
2. Choose the make of your car.
3. Choose the model of your car.
4. Choose the body style.
5. Enter the mileage.
6. Enter a price. If you’re not sure what your car is worth visit Kelly Blue Book.
7. Choose the trim.
8. Choose how many doors your car has.
9. Select how big your engine is.
10. Choose whether your car has an automatic or manual transmission.
11. Select the type of fuel your car takes.
12. Choose the drive type — is it 4wd or 2wd?
13. Choose the exterior color of your car.
14. Choose the interior color of your car.
15. Enter your VIN. This stands for “vehicle identification number” and it can be found on your insurance card, title, inside the driver’s door jam or on the dash underneath the windshield.
Note: If at any time you have any questions AutoTrader has a nice bubble that will pop up on almost every one of the fields. It’ll explain what that particular field means and what type of info they need from you.
16. Select what options your vehicle has.
17. Enter “Seller’s Comments.”
In this box you should include details about your car not covered above. This can include the previous maintenance and repair history, any upgrades the car has had, any accidents you may have been in and damage to the car. AutoTrader will also have a popup box with suggestions for different phrases you can use.
18. Contact Information.
Fill in your contact information, including your phone number and email. Then choose a security question and answer.
Step 5. Add photos.
On this page you can add your photos. I highly recommend uploading as many photos as possible. They will help to answer your buyer’s questions, and just give them a better idea of the vehicle overall. If your package doesn’t come with enough pictures you can buy more using the “Buy more photos” link.
Once you have all of your photos uploaded click on the “Next” button.
Step 6. Review your ad.
On this page you can review your ad before you pay for it. Be sure that your pictures look good, all the details are included in your ad and that all of your vehicle’s information is correct. Once you’re done click the “Next” button.
Step 7. Review your ad — part 2.
This page is an extension of the “review your ad” page. Here you will find upgrades that you can buy for your ad including thumbnail images, a CARFAX report, graphic tiles and ad extensions. Choose what options you’d like to add and click the “Next” button.
Step 8. Purchase your ad.
Review your order and if everything looks good input your payment and billing information. Once you’re done click “Submit Order.”
Note: I didn’t buy the ad since I don’t have a car to sell. However, there is only one step left which is to confirm your ad. My guess is that you’ll have to confirm your ad via email before it goes live.
That’s It…Your Car is Listed on AutoTrader
That’s all there is to listing your vehicle on AutoTrader. Since I didn’t buy the ad I couldn’t tell you whether or not you could (or how to) edit or delete your ad. If there is an option you’ll likely find it under your account. But push come to shove you can just contact support too.
Good luck with your sale!
